How to Get Your First 10 Supporters (Without Feeling Like You're Begging)

Two South African friends, a coloured woman with curly hair and a Black man, laughing together on a stoep while looking at one phone

Your first ten supporters won't come from strangers. They'll come from people who already like you and were waiting for a way to show it. Your job this week isn't to go viral. It's to tell those people, clearly, that the way now exists.

Why ten is the number that matters

Ten supporters on a R49 tier is R490 a month. That isn't a salary. What it is: proof. Ten people paying means the page works, your posts have a rhythm, and the eleventh person who lands on your page sees that others already support you. Getting from zero to ten is the hardest part of the whole thing. After that, it's mostly showing up.

Who to ask first

  1. The people who already DM you. Anyone who has asked "where did you get that?", "when's the next one?" or "can you help me with...". They told you they want more.
  2. Your regular commenters. Scroll your last ten posts. The same names come up. Those are your first fans.
  3. Friends and family. Not to guilt them into paying, but because they share. Ask them to repost your launch story, not to subscribe.
💡
Start with a free tier. A free tier on Sociaal lets anyone follow your page and get an email when you post for them, without paying. It's a much smaller ask than "pay me", and every free follower is someone you can turn into a paying one later.

What to say (copy these)

Say what it is, what they get, and that it's okay not to. That last part is what stops it feeling like begging.

💬
Instagram or TikTok story:
"I've opened a members page. Every week there's the full [workout / recipe / episode / tutorial] that doesn't fit on here, from R49 a month. If you've been enjoying my stuff, this is the best way to support it. No pressure, the free posts aren't going anywhere." + link sticker.

WhatsApp Status:
"Big one for me: I've got my own page now where you can support what I make, in rands. sca.al/@yourname 🙏"

A DM to someone who asked for help before:
"Hey! You asked me about [thing] a while back. I've just put the full version on my page, thought you'd want it: sca.al/@yourname"

One DM to a real person beats ten stories. Send five this week to people who've already asked you for something.

Your launch week

  • Day 1: Post your first paid post before you announce. Nobody wants to pay for an empty room.
  • Day 2: Announce on Stories and WhatsApp Status, with the link. Use one of the lines above.
  • Day 3: A normal free post that ends with "the full version is on my page."
  • Day 4: Send five DMs to people who've asked you for something.
  • Day 5: Behind the scenes: show yourself making the paid post. It shows the work is real.
  • Day 6: Thank your first supporters publicly (first names only, with their permission). Nothing sells a page like other people already on it.
  • Day 7: Check your Analytics. Where did your visitors come from? Do more of that next week.

Make tipping easy too

Not everyone wants a monthly subscription. Some people just want to say thanks once. Once you're verified, a tip button sits on your page, and fans don't need an account to use it. Mention it after a post that clearly helped people: "If this saved you money, you can send me a tip, link in bio." Tips are often the first money a new page makes.

⚠️
What puts people off. Announcing every day for a month. Guilt ("if you really supported me..."). A page with nothing on it yet. Announce properly once, then mention it naturally at the end of your posts.

After the first ten

Keep the rhythm you promised. Reply to every supporter. Once a month, post something only for them that makes them glad they're there. Growth after the first ten comes from your free content doing its job and your page being worth landing on.

If you haven't yet, start with part one: where to put your link so people tap it. Not sure what to put behind the paywall? Read what subscribers actually pay for.
