What is Sociaal?

Sociaal is a South African platform where creators get paid by their fans in rands. You get a free link-in-bio page (sca.al/@yourname) with tips, monthly memberships, a shop for downloads and custom packs, and free followers. Fans pay in rands and you cash out to your South African bank account.

Who is Sociaal for?

South African creators aged 18 and over with a South African bank account: podcasters, streamers, musicians, artists, photographers, writers, educators, and fitness, food and beauty creators. It suits creators whose fans are mostly in South Africa and would rather pay in rands than in dollars.

How much does Sociaal cost?

Creating your page is free and there is no monthly fee. When you earn, Sociaal keeps 10% of each tip, membership payment and shop sale, and the card processing fee from our payment processor (about 3.3% + R1.15 per payment) is taken off too. Example: on a R100 tip you keep R85.51 (R10 Sociaal fee, R4.49 card fee). Each cash-out to your bank costs a flat R5.

How do I get my money?

Your earnings collect in your Sociaal balance. Cash out whenever you have R100 or more; it is paid in rands to your South African bank account, with a flat R5 fee per cash-out. There is no currency conversion, PayPal or Payoneer.

What do I need before I can take payments?

Your page and links work as soon as you sign up. To switch on payments, add a South African bank account in your own name and upload four documents: your SA ID or passport, a selfie holding your ID, a bank confirmation letter and a proof of address. We check them by hand and turn payments on once they are approved.

Do fans need an account to pay?

No account is needed to tip (from R5) or to buy from a creator's shop; fans just enter an email address. Monthly memberships need a free fan account so the fan can see the members-only posts. Fans must be 16 or older; 16 and 17 year olds need a parent's permission.

How do fans pay?

Fans pay in rands with any South African Visa or Mastercard, debit or credit, or by scanning a QR code. It is a normal local payment, so fans don't need to switch on international or online-overseas payments with their bank, and nothing is charged in dollars. Payments go through a secure, PCI-DSS certified payment processor; card details never touch Sociaal.

Can I move from Patreon or Linktree?

Yes. Migration is free: send us your current Patreon or Linktree link at sociaal.co.za/migrate and we set up your Sociaal page with your links. You can run both side by side while your fans move over.

Is Sociaal a good Patreon alternative?

For South African creators with South African fans, yes: fans pay in rands with any South African debit or credit card as a local payment (no international payments to switch on), you are paid in rands to a local bank, and your link-in-bio page, tips, memberships and shop are on one page. If most of your fans are overseas and happy to pay in dollars, Patreon or Ko-fi may suit you better.
