WHEN A DESIRE BECOMES AN IDOL… 👀 Ekklesia | Heart-Check Series 🌿 Not every desire is an idol. Not every strong emotion means you've put something before God. But sometimes, without even realising it, we give a desire a place in our hearts that belongs to the Lord alone. Let's have an honest heart-check. 🌿 1. Do I have peace only when things go the way I want? 🌿 2. Have I started compromising my convictions because I'm afraid of losing someone or something? 🌿 3. Do I spend more time obsessing over what I want than nurturing my relationship with God? 🌿 4. When God's Word challenges what I desire, do I obey—or look for a way to justify myself? 🌿 5. Have I made my happiness dependent on receiving something God has not promised me? These questions aren't meant to shame you. They're invitations to honesty. An idol isn't always a golden statue. Sometimes it's a relationship, a dream, the need to be chosen, the desire to be noticed, or even our need to control how our lives unfold. And here's the uncomfortable part… We can become so consumed with asking God to bless what we want that we never stop to ask whether our hearts are still surrendered to Him. We say, “Lord, Your will be done,” but do we mean it when His will challenges our own? We say, “God comes first,” but what happens when putting Him first means obeying Him at the expense of something we desperately want? Jesus said: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” — Matthew 6:21 (KJV) A QUESTION TO TAKE INTO PRAYER: If God doesn't give me what I desire, will I still give Him my heart? Not just my words. Not just my Sunday worship. My heart. This doesn't mean you must stop desiring good things, nor does disappointment mean you lack faith. It means being willing to let God examine your desires and realign your heart. LET'S TALK, EKKLESIA: Which is hardest to surrender to God? A) Relationships B) Dreams and personal ambitions C) Control over how things turn out D) The need for approval and acceptance E) Something else entirely Share your letter or your thoughts below. Let's create a space where we can grow in truth without judging one another. Sometimes the beginning of freedom is admitting what has been holding our hearts. Ekklesia — Rooted in Christ.
